How the calculation works
Blocking (Hijab) — closer relatives exclude more distant ones (e.g. a son blocks grandchildren through him; a father blocks the grandfather).
Fixed shares (Fard) — Quranic shares are assigned: spouses, parents, daughters, and others (Qur'an 4:11–12, 4:176).
Residuary (Ta'sib) — whatever remains goes to the nearest residuary heirs, males receiving twice the female share.
'Awl — if fixed shares exceed 100%, all are reduced proportionally.
Radd — if shares fall short of 100% with no residuary heirs, the remainder returns to the fixed-share heirs (except spouses).
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this calculator?
The engine implements the standard Quranic fixed shares, residuary distribution, 'awl and radd, and was validated against a published Fara'id reference implementation across 2,000+ heir combinations in both Hanafi and Jumhur modes. It handles the classical special cases (Umariyyatan, Akdariyya, Mushtaraka) and shows where schools differ.
Which school of thought should I choose?
The schools agree in the vast majority of cases. They differ mainly when a grandfather inherits alongside siblings, and in the Mushtaraka case. Choose the school you follow; if a difference applies to your case, the calculator will flag it and let you compare both views.
Do debts and funeral expenses come out first?
Yes — in Islamic law, funeral expenses, outstanding debts, and any valid bequest (up to 1/3 of the estate, to non-heirs) are settled before the inheritance is divided. Enter the net estate value after these deductions.
What if an heir is missing, disputed, or non-Muslim?
This calculator assumes all listed heirs are eligible. Legal impediments (e.g. differences of religion), missing persons, and simultaneous-death cases need a scholar's judgment — the tool will note blocked heirs but cannot resolve disputes.
Is my data private?
Completely. Every calculation runs in your browser — nothing you type is sent to any server, stored, or tracked.
Important: This tool is for education and estimation only. Real estates may involve debts, bequests, missing heirs, or differences between schools of thought. Always have the final distribution confirmed by a qualified scholar or mufti.
